What is Toasted Timber?

Toasted timber is thermally modified timber — natural wood enhanced through a controlled process using only heat and steam, with no chemicals. This changes the wood at a cellular level, making it more stable, more durable and better suited to long-term use, especially in challenging environments.

How It's Made

The timber is placed into a specialised kiln, where it undergoes three key stages:

• Drying: the wood is gently heated to remove moisture.
• Thermal Modification: the temperature is raised to approximately 160–230°C, altering the timber's structure using only heat and steam.
• Cooling & Conditioning: the timber is slowly cooled and a small amount of moisture is reintroduced to improve workability.

This natural transformation reduces the timber's ability to absorb water, enhances its resistance to decay, and gives it a rich, warm brown tone throughout the entire piece.
